GVZ
GVZ was basically ELIZA but dumber. Its name is short for “geveze”, which means “chatterbox” in Turkish.
It had arguably the most simple-minded pattern matching algorithm (i.e. a series of if
statements), but came with some advanced features, such as:
- Understands a total of 385 patterns including “asl” and “shit”
- Has message presets such as “This program is awesome!” and “Props to your programmer!”
- Greets you differently according to the time of day
- Can strike up random conversations and do simple calculations
- Uses smileys :)
- Knows about celebrities such as Britney Spears and Gandalf
- Nudges you a few times, then leaves, if you don’t answer for a while
- If you swear enough, retaliates by changing its nickname to something offensive (which I’ll leave to your imagination)
It wasn’t a language model, but it was honest work.
