OGZ_DVD
Oyungezer is a Turkish video game magazine. I was one of the founding editors, working there between 2007 to 2016.
“OGZ_DVD” is the codename for the promotional DVDs we distributed along the magazine. I designed, developed and maintained the interface, as well as being responsible for curating the content. This went on for 76 months, reaching tens of thousands of people, until it was no longer financially feasible.
I developed the first version of the application between September-October 2007 with Visual Basic 6. Apart from listing the game demos, videos, patches and the like, it had extra features such as an internal media player that was able to update the user’s MSN Messenger status.
In late 2009, I started rewriting the interface in C++, which took me about 300 hours. This second version brought many improvements such as a larger window, transparent PNGs, scrollable multiline lists, thumbnails, customizable menus, tag system, multiple video renderer options, and a search functionality.
Not to mention the easter eggs, one of which allowed you to play music with the keyboard after typing a special keyword, or the one that made people see their own name on the interface.
Later on, this program was used by Free2Play and Foto Atlas magazines too.
OGZ_DVD is the project that kick started my career in software development. It has a special place in my heart, and I still feel warm and fuzzy when someone mentions how they loved an indie game I put in one of those DVDs.
